June BKA "Fight Nite" Report

The first of BKA's fight nites was held on Thursday 7 June 2007 and was attended by over a dozen adult students.

Run by Sensei Clive, the first class had a strong focus on stamina building and featured sets of "boxing" style drills, including:

  • Trunk curls with focus mitt punching
  • One minute burst intensive bagwork
  • One minute burst intensive kicking exercises
  • Partnered co-ordination excercises

The class then moved into fast-paced sparring, with one defender facing a series of multiple attackers of the course of 2 minutes.

This proved to be both the most exhilarating and certainly the most testing part of the session. Not so much a test of pure Karate fighting ability; more a means of seeing how each individual could deal with both pressure and the onset of fatigue.

A definite eye opener for all the students, highlighting the clear importance of fitness, awareness AND strong technique!

Given the heavy focus on fitness testing, Sensei Clive made very clear that students were able to take a break at any time to regain both their breath and composure. This served the class very well, with students identifying their own limits and learning more about where further fitness work would be required.

All the students attending found the class rewarding, both as a workout and as a training session. The dynamic within the class was very fast paced and represented a great mix of adrenalin and discipline.

Bring on the July session!
